SPECIAL ORDERS, No. 59.



I. Upon the recommendation of the chief surgeon of the Department, Acting Assistant Surgeon George K. Sims, U. S. Army, now in hospital, Iloilo, will proceed by first available transportation to Manila, P. I., reporting upon arrival to the commanding officer, 1st Reserve Hospital, Manila, with a view to being transferred to the United States.

The travel directed is necessary for the public service.



II. The following named enlisted men will report to Lieutenant Colonel C. J. Crane, 38th Infantry, U. S. Volunteers, president of the board of officers convened by paragraph III, Special Orders, No. 55, current series, these headquarters, at Iloilo, 11 a. m., March 4, 1901,, for examination to determine their fitness for appointment to the grade of Second Lieutenant in the U S. Army:

The quartermaster's department will furnish the necessary transportation and the subsistence department will arrange for their proper subsistence during the journey.



III. Upon the recommendation of the chief surgeon, the following changes of stations and assignments to duty of medical officers of the Department are announced:

Acting Assistant Surgeon J. A. Escobar, U. S. Army, now at Cebu, to proceed to Danao, Cebu, reporting upon arrival to the commanding officer to relieve Acting Assistant Surgeon H. M. Cohen, U. S. Army, who upon being thus relieved will proceed to Cebu, Cebu, for duty as attending surgeon to military prisoners.

The travel directed is necessary for the public service.



IV. Upon the recommendation of the chief surgeon of the Department the following changes of stations and assignments to duty of medical officers and members of the Hospital Corps, U. S. Army, are announced:

Acting Assistant Surgeon William H. Tefft, U. S. Army, to proceed from Janiuay, Panay, to Cabatuan, Panay, reporting upon arrival to the commanding officer to relieve Captain F. A. Washburn, assistant surgeon, 26th Infantry, U. S. Volunteers, to whom he will receipt for all medical property left at the station; Acting Assistant Surgeon E. C. Shattuck, U. S. Army, now at Tacloban, Leyte, to proceed to Ormoc, Leyte, reporting upon arrival to the commanding officer to relieve Acting Assistant Surgeon, W. K. Beatty, U. S. Army, to enable the latter to comply with the provisions of Special Orders, No. 49, current series, Headquarters Division of the Philippines; Acting Hospital Steward Louis J. Harrison, Hospital Corps, U. S. Army, now at Jaro, Panay, to proceed to Cabatuan, Panay, reporting upon arrival to the commanding officer for duty at that station.

V. Corporal J. B. Stevenson, Company M, 6th U. S. Infantry, is hereby detailed on special duty with the custom house guard and will report to the collector of customs for duty.



VI. Privates Gustav Brawback, Company K, and James N. Sims, Company L, 18th U. S. Infantry, now at Iloilo, will proceed to-day by S. S. General Blanco, to Capiz. P. I., reporting upon arrival to the commanding officer.

The quartermaster's department will furnish the necessary transportation and the subsistence department will arrange for their proper subsistence during the journey.

The travel directed is necessary for the public service.



VII. Major Henry S. Turrill, chief surgeon of the Department, surgeon, U. S. Army, is hereby detailed as a member of the board for the examination of enlisted men constituted in paragraph III, Special Orders, No. 55, current series, these healquarters, vice Major Charles F. Mason, surgeon 26th infantry, U. S. Volunteers, assistant surgeon, U. S. Army, hereby relieved.



VIII. Upon the recommendation of the chief surgeon of the Department, and pending the action of the Division Commander on his application for sick leave for two months upon surgeon's certificate of disability. Colonel E. Rice, 26th Infantry, U. S. Volunteers, will proceed to Manila. P. I., reporting upon arrival to the commanding officer, First Reserve Hospital, Manila, for examination as to the nature of his disease.
